LED - What exactly does this mean and what are the advantages?

LED Advantages: LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are a solid state lighting technology that use semiconductor material instead of a filament or neon gas. LEDs offer an array of distinct advantages over other technologies, such as fluorescent and incandescent, including:
Low heat output - LEDs operate within a low-voltage environment, so they consume far less energy than other technologies. This means they will generate very little heat. In comparison, incandescent lighting dumps 90% of the energy it consumes as heat, making the bulbs hot to the touch. Because LEDs generate less heat and are cool to the touch, they can be utilized in more applications & may reduce the potential for safety risks such as burns and fires. Lower heat output can also reduce air conditioning loads inside buildings.
Low voltage - LEDs are up to 90% more power efficient than other lighting. LEDs consume much less power, making them less expensive to operate. Using LED in place of fluorescent or incandescent lighting will reduce power costs. LEDs also eliminate arcing hazards, providing increased safety.
Durable - LEDs are solid state lighting. This means there are no glass bulbs, delicate filaments, or complex tubing in an LED display. Thus, it's easier and less expensive to build displays underwater and in environments where there is vibration, dust, explosive gases, or wind. The absence of glass and filament components in LEDs makes them far more resistant to shock and vibration. LEDs have no startup delays, meaning they glow immediately, without flicker, even in cold climates and harsh environments.
Long life - LEDs have the longest lifetimes of any lighting technology available on the market. The life of an LED bulb can range up to 100,000 hours, compared to about 1500 hours for a standard filament light bulb. Long life reduces maintenance costs and lowers long-term operating costs, which can dramatically increase the overall return on investment.
Multiple colors - A single LED bulb can produce millions of colors. Incandescent and halogen lighting require lenses to produce color. By using a lens, there will be a dramatic drop the color's luminosity and intensity. LEDs do not use a lens, so they produce colored light that is richer and more vibrant, with higher light output.
Environmentally Friendly - LEDs contain absolutely no mercury, unlike fluorescent lighting, which has 10 to 40mg Hg per bulb. LEDs do not produce EMI emissions, in contrast to fluorescent lighting, which produces substantial EMI emissions. LED Lighting is considered to be Earth-friendly, or "green" lighting.
